INTRODUCTION

It has been well documented that crossword puzzles are an effective language teaching tool. Not to mention that they are enjoyable to complete. This ten unit book is designed to helpEnglish language learners, both first and second language and both young people and adults,to expand their vocabularies and, hopefully, to let them have fun doing it!

101 Illustrated Crossword Puzzles uses drawings as a visual stimulus to aid in vocabularyacquisition. This type of crossword puzzle works because a pictorial representation puts theword into context. The drawing shows the student what the word is. Result: the student has apicture in her mind of what the thing is.

The ten units in this book cover nine themes. The units are:

Unit One: Opposites Unit Two: Outer SpaceUnit Three: SafetyUnit Four: Sea Creatures Unit Five: Taking A Trip Unit Six: In The City Unit Seven: Insects Unit Eight: Musical Instruments Unit Nine: Health Care Unit Ten: Combined

The tenth unit is a combination of words from the first nine units.

Each of Units One through Nine features thirty arbitrarily chosen vocabulary words.

Each unit has ten crossword puzzles.

In Units One through Nine the first page of each unit has a list of thirty numbered sentences. Each vocabulary word is used in a sentence. The sentences aim to use the words in an every-day context. The teacher can decide how to use this feature. The numbers for the sentencescorrespond with a pictorial representation of that word on the following page.

The drawings page has the thirty words depicted pictorially. The vocabulary word is writtenbeneath each drawing. And below that is a line for the student to write the word. Practicingspelling is the idea. The drawings page can serve as a handy reference tool when completingthe crosswords.

Next comes three ten word puzzles with each vocabulary word used once. The illustrations aregiven with their position on the puzzle (e.g. D7). The word clues are in a row in random orderbetween two rows of five illustrations each. The students match the picture and its word. If astudent has difficulty, she can refer to the drawings page.

There are two fifteen word puzzles. Each word is used in one of the two puzzles. A checklistof the words in the puzzle is given.

Then there are three twenty word puzzles. Each word is used in two of the three puzzles.Again, a checklist is given.

Finally, there are two puzzles of the entire thirty word lesson. No checklist is given for these. These test the students recall not only for what the drawing is, but also how that word isspelled.

Unit Ten consists of eleven puzzles of twenty-four words each. The puzzles use a mixture ofthe words from the first nine units and a checklist is given.

Teachers may choose to not use all of the activity sheets in a given unit.

This book can be used with other thematically related materials.

There is a complete Answer Key included at the end of each lesson.

UNIT 6IN THE CITY

1. The curb is where the street and the sidewalk meet.2. A street is a public road in a town or city.3. A person who is walking is called a pedestrian.4. The sign in the drawing indicates a one way street.5. I drive my car to the city every day.6. If the traffic light turns red, I stop.7. The safest place to walk is on the sidewalk.8. A skyscraper is a very tall building.9. It’s easier to take the bus downtown than it is to drive your own car.10. My mother works in an office building on Tenth Street.11. I dropped some letters into the mailbox.12. I buy magazines and newspapers at the newsstand.13. The corner is where two streets meet.14. The street sign let me know I had found Maple Street.15. I put a couple of quarters into the parking meter.16. I bought a hot dog from a street vendor.17. The store where I buy my shoes moved to the mall.18. Litter should always be placed in a trash can. Keep your city clean!19. Ad is short for advertisement. In the city you see ads on billboards.20. The safest place to cross the street is at a crosswalk.21. When I’m in a big hurry I take a taxi.22. The parking lot at the mall is huge. We had trouble finding our car!23. The subway travels underground.24. I use my calling card when I make calls from a phone booth.25. The flag on our building was flapping in the wind.26. My father has to be at the bus stop by 6:30 a.m. to catch the bus.27. The traffic is always heavy around our city.28. The skyline is the outline of a city against the sky.29. The kids on our street open the fire hydrant on hot summer days.30. I always park my car near a street light.
