2 Details of Innovative/ New Technology Background
Innovation/New in put.
The main aim of this activity was to develop appropriate
technology for the Blacksmiths artisans to develop proper tools
for rural sectors. In this, the study and analysis of the existing techniques of
Blacksmithy with respect to the chemical, mechanical & structural analysis was carried
out. The work was carried out for various Agricultural tools in
the main cluster areas such as Chhattisgarh, Gujrath, Chandrapur & Wardha etc.
Based on the study a totally new technique was developed
and implemented in the clusters. The energy efficient &
ergonomically suitable workstation was also designed, developed & implemented at
some of the clusters near Bardoli in Gujrath.
Impact in KVIC Sector The technology has the potential to reduce human
drudgery & also to improve the life of the tool & thus, can benefit the KVI sector.

In this activity the main aim was to develop suitable products from the
agricultural/forest wastes so as to provide an alternative
material for the traditional woods & plywood. The different types of raw materials which
are used in the production of laminates were collected from
the Vidarbha region like Bhandara, Chandrapur & from some villages near by Nagpur
districts. DETAILS OF RAW MATERIAL & THEIR SPECIFICATION
1. Fine sugarcane bagasse and
all waste materials. 2. Fine teak wood of required
fineness (100mesh)
3. Resin-urea formaldehyde/phenol
formaldehyde 4. Hardener-Ammonia liquid
and Ammonium chloride
5. Wax for surface finish & Paraffin liquid for easy
removal of laminates from the mold (detaching agent)
Impact in KVIC Sector The technology has the
potential to provide alternative material to the plywood &
conventional wood through use of naturally available waste raw materials, thus, can benefit the
KVI sector. According to inputs
received during the primary
survey, the technology has not been adopted by the VI entrepreneurs. Concerted
efforts are required for adoption of this technology by the VI sector.

2 Details of Innovative/ New Technology Background
Innovation/New in put
The important machinery used in a conventional ginning
industry having Ginning & Pressing units in India are – 1) Ginning Machine, 2) Lint
Opener, 3) Belt Conveyor & 4) Press Machine. Existing double
roller ginning machine has complicated drive system, requiring very large number of
bearings and also requires large amount of grease for
lubrication. The leakage of grease spoils the quality of lint and it also needs more running
cost with very high starting current. Hence a double roller gin is modified, redesigned and fabricated.
Impact in KVIC Sector The technology has the
potential to increase the income of VI entrepreneurs
and generate employment, thus, can benefit the KVI sector.

Modified Mechanical Press
machine for mini cotton ginnery was developed for 90 kg bale as
shown in the figure. Upper platen attached to the power screws, compresses lint cotton
in the box. Limit switches stop the travel of platen at the end of
compression. Nine unitized platen were provided at top and bottom platen. The unitized
platen reduces power requirement for compression by approximately 15%. The
dimensions of bale measured in compressed condition of platen
were 1175 x 475 x 450 mm. Bagging were used for covering of the bale and G.I. wire of 3.5
mm diameter inserted through unitized platen for tying of bale.
Bale was removed from the machine. The dimensions of bale were found to be 1200 x
550 x500 mm
Impact in KVIC Sector The technology has the
potential to start small scale ginnery on cooperative basis. It may
increase the income of VI entrepreneurs and
generate employment, thus, can benefit the KVI sector. According to
inputs received during the primary survey, the technology has not been
adopted by the VI
entrepreneurs. Concerted efforts are required for adoption of this technology

Technology Background Innovation/New in put
Stirrup or lateral-ties are
rectangular, square or circular shaped reinforced element
made out of 6 mm or 10mm either in plain mild steel or torr-steel bar. The important
functions of stirrup are- To hold and support
horizontal and vertical plain mild steel or torr-steel bar
To provide reinforcement and
rigidity to columns and beams.
To provide proper anchorage.
Presently, the stirrups are
made manually. However, the manual stirrup making process suffers from many drawbacks
like lack of accuracy, low productivity, poor quality,
severe fatigue to operator etc. Considering these drawbacks three versions of stirrup
making machines are designed & developed. 1. Motorized & fully automatic
2. Motorized & semi automatic 3. Pedal operated
Impact in KVIC Sector The technology has the potential to increase the
income of VI entrepreneurs and generate employment, thus, can benefit the KVI
sector. Two types of enterprises are possible. 1. To fabricate stirrup
making machine
2. To produce the stirrups using the machine & to market it at the
construction sites.

2 Details of Innovative/ New
Technology Background Innovation/New in put
Dhoop Stick is incense in the
form of various mixtures of Panchagavya along with the
special additions. It provides a pleasant fragrance & freshness, holistic environment and used
as Pooja Material. Presently these Dhoop sticks
are produced manually by rural technologies available at various regions such as use of
aluminum pipe, hand rolling and squeezing technique, etc. This technique results in low
production rate with poor quality and non-uniform
surface finish. Hence in order to overcome these, problems, the hand
operated extruder was designed and developed for the various
NGO’s working in these fields.
Impact in KVIC Sector The technology has the potential to increase
productivity and product quality, thus, can benefit
the KVI sector. The productivity has been increased almost by 3
times.

2 Details of Innovative/ New
Technology Background Innovation/New in put
Generally the groundnut
kernels are taken out from the pods by cracking the shell
applying finger pressure. By this method the output per man-hour is very low (1-
2.5Kg/Hr) which results in very high unit cost of shelling & also
the human fatigue is more. Many a times the farmer sell un-decorticator groundnut
which fetches lower returns as compared to decorticated. To overcome these difficulties VNIT
has developed power operated groundnut decorticators. The
decorticators give high output per man-hour with little injury or damaged to Kernels deemed
desirable for both decorticating groundnut seeds as well as
decorticating marketable surplus for better returns from the produce.
Impact in KVIC Sector The technology has the
potential to reduce human drudgery, thus, can benefit the KVI sector. Concerted
efforts are required for adoption of this technology
by the VI sector.

The use of biodiesel as a diesel
fuel extender and lubricity improver is rapidly increasing.
Since it was essential to know the cold flow behavior of different biodiesel fuels which
are important in the Indian Context. The cold flow
properties of 100% Biodiesel fuels obtained from different vegetable species like
Pongamia, Jatropha, Mahua and Neem oil were evaluated. To produce the biodiesel from
Jatropha, Mahua and Neem a small capacity plant is
developed at VNIT. The capacity of the unit is 50 lit/day A small kit to produce biodiesel
is also developed.
