Background Information

• This exhilarating sport of skydiving has been around for 100 of years, but was not always classified as a sport.

• The first parachute was built in 1495 by Leonardo Di Vinci

• It was made out of a wooden frame in the shape of a pyramid and was extremely heavy. *2

• Parachutes were used during the World Wars to provide a distraction for balloon pilots so they could land their aircraft safely.

• After the Second World War was when skydiving become a hobby. *3

• In the year 2000 there was a total of 3,500,000 skydivers and only 30 of those skydivers died. 12 of those fatalities were due to malfunctioning gear. *3

• Skydiving is an extreme sport, but that does not mean that it is a dangerous sport. There are many other activities being done everyday that have a higher fatality rate then skydiving. These activities includes things such as scuba diving, driving, boating, traveling etc.
