Australia DayBarbecues, thong races and tug ‘o’ war in true Aussie celebrations

Australia Day festivities were in full swing across the Shire of Ashburton as each of the four towns celebrated on January 26.

Free barbecues, fun activities and award ceremonies were hosted in each town, thanks largely to the ongoing support of Rio Tinto.

Community groups, families and friends competed in a range of traditional Australia Day games and applauded the winners of the Premier’s Active Citizenship Awards.

Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Pannawonica hosted Australia Day parties at the local pool with a free barbecue breakfast, water games, inflatable thong races and the highly contested ‘homemade regatta’.

Onslow residents celebrated at the Onslow Sports Club with live entertainment, evening barbecue and the popular sack races and tug ‘o’ war, with plenty to keep the kids amused including face painting, slippery slide and bouncy castle.

Shire President Kerry White says it’s wonderful to see the Australian spirit of camaraderie and mateship clearly evident within each of our towns.

“Friendship and community kinship are great Australian characteristics and we especially rely on these when living within a remote town,” said Cr White. “To see residents of all ages come together to have fun, participate and enjoy the celebrations highlights the strength of our own local spirit.”

Rio Tinto General Manager Paraburdoo Operations Scott Wilkinson said the Australia Day celebrations were a wonderful way to connect and recognise the hard work of community members.

“Rio Tinto is proud to be a long-term supporter of the Shire of Ashburton Australia Day festivities which not only celebrate and acknowledge the outstanding contributions of local

residents to the communities of Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Pannawonica, but provide a great opportunity for local families to enjoy a fun day out,” Mr Wilkinson said.

The Australia Day celebrations in each town rely on the generous support given by local businesses and community groups and the Shire of Ashburton would like to express its thanks to everyone involved that help make these events possible.

A big part of the Australia Day celebrations is the announcement of the Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards which focus on community contribution and participation rather than personal achievement.

The award categories include:

• Outstanding community contribution for by a local citizen

• Outstanding community contribution by a local citizen under 25 years of age

• Outstanding community contribution by a local group or community event.

Congratulations Kate Jarrett from New South Wales on winning the My Pilbara Adventure 2015 grand prize.

Kate Jarrett from New South Wales will enjoy a guided 12 day, all-expenses-paid holiday for two in the Pilbara, experiencing the region’s spectacular landscape, sacred culture, fascinating history and adventure activities.

From the white sands of the Dampier Archipelago to the plunging gorges of Karijini National Park, Kate, and her husband Graeme, will experience it all.

My Pilbara Adventure is an initiative of the Pilbara Development Commission.

The Shire of Ashburton is proud to have supported the competition in 2014 and 2015.

The Commission worked together with the four Pilbara local government authorities and respective Visitor Information Centres to co-ordinate this year’s draw on Australia Day in Karratha, Paraburdoo, Newman and Port Hedland.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Keith Anthonisz said the combined location of the draw was an opportunity for the whole Pilbara to be involved in the campaign.

“For a region that extends more than 500,000 square kilometres there are a great array of tourism attractions, which made selecting one location to hold the campaign prize draw very difficult.

“So we took the opportunity to engage the four local government districts in an interactive announcement that people could watch unfold through social media,” Mr Anthonisz said.

To achieve the joint prize draw all entries into the competition were allocated a four-digit entry number. The draw started at one location’s community Australia Day breakfast where the first number of the four-digit sequence was drawn. The remaining numbers were drawn in sequence in the three remaining locations throughout the morning and posted live onto the campaign’s Facebook page.

The four numbers, in the sequence they were drawn selected the winning entry.

The tourism campaign is in its second year and has achieved a significantly greater number of entries.

“We’ve received almost 5000 entries this year, up from 750 entries received last year,” Mr Anthonisz said.

“These figures are a strong indication that interest in the Pilbara as a place to visit is growing exponentially.

Tourism has been considered in the Commission’s draft Regional Investment Blueprint as a key area of focus to achieve economic diversification.

“Developing the tourism industry is a priority for the Commission and we recognise that it will take the collaborative effort of all levels of Government and advocates of the tourism industry to achieve the region’s vision for industry growth,” Mr Anthonisz said.

“This is also a fantastic opportunity to build momentum for the implementation of the Pilbara Tourism Product Development Plan which was released by the Commission late last year.”

A daily blog and video diary will capture the 2015 adventure through the My Pilbara Adventure website and social media page.

Landmark sculpture now in ParaburdooA unique public sculpture was unveiled in Paraburdoo in December.

Over 18 months, miners and community members worked side-by-side with well-known Western Australian sculptor Alex Mickle to develop and use unconventional approaches to building an artwork that pushes the boundaries of contemporary sculpture in Australia.

The sculpture is, in part, made from steel plate shaped during a series of controlled blasts on the Rio Tinto mine site. Banded Iron Formation stone, excavated on the mine site, was cut and polished by dozens of community members working at the Para Men’s Shed for what amounted to thousands of hours.

The sculpture, titled RESILIENCE, is located about three kilometres from Paraburdoo, on the road to Tom Price, and is a landmark of great significance for the community and for visitors to the region.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Mental Health Andrea Mitchell MLA and Rio Tinto Managing Director Pilbara Mines, Michael Gollschewski, unveiled the unique work.

Ms Mitchell said “The sculpture itself is not only beautiful, but a relevant addition to the region that shows an interesting combination of references to the mining industry, geological history, Indigenous culture and resilience of remote Western Australian communities.”

Mr Gollschewski said that while the company could never have anticipated how successful FIVE would be, the Paraburdoo story in itself has become quite remarkable.

“Our challenge was to develop a partnership that would support people beyond the gates of their workplace, build community connections and raise awareness around mental health,” he said.

“FIVE did, indeed, capture the hearts and minds of our employees and became a high priority for our team.

“It has helped change perceptions about what it means to be creative and part of a community, while promoting a culture where it is ok to talk about how you are feeling.”

Arts and health organisation DADAA and Rio Tinto collaborated on the project to enable the experimental work that has engaged the remote mining community and will leave a legacy to the iron ore industry and the people of Paraburdoo.

The Shire of Ashburton provided in-kind sponsorship.

The sculpture is part of the statewide FIVE project that aims to address the stigma of mental health through arts engagement by bringing communities together and facilitating dialogue around difficult issues.

Additional Information on FIVEFIVE is a partnership between leading community arts and cultural development organisation DADAA and Rio Tinto. To date, arts activities have taken place in Busselton, Geraldton, Derby, Esperance and Paraburdoo.

The initiative supports the Mental Health Commission’s Mental Health 2020 strategy and addresses findings from recent research noting lack of communication and social isolation as contributing factors to poor mental health – particularly amongst the State’s regional communities.

About DADAADADAA is a not-for-profit community arts and cultural development organisation that creates

significant positive social change and opportunities for people with disability or mental illness.

Based in Fremantle, DADAA offers targeted arts and cultural programs that include a broad range of traditional and new media projects in almost 50 Western Australian communities.

A social impacts evaluation of the project is being conducted in partnership with Murdoch University.

In August 2014, FIVE received national recognition when it won a silver Achievement Award at the Mental Health Services Awards ceremony for ‘Mental Health Promotion or Mental Illness Prevention’.

Shire wins national award for Onslow airport

The Onslow Airport won a national airports award in November.

The awards, organised by the Australian Airports Association, recognised Onslow Airport in the ‘Non-RPT Certified Airport of the Year’ category of the Airport Industry Awards 2014.

Almost 600 people packed into the Gold Coast Convention Centre for the annual awards gala night which celebrates the achievements of individuals and airports, both big and small over the past year.

The Shire’s entry was for the first stage of the Onslow Airport redevelopment involving the construction of the new runway, taxiways and apron. To meet the growing demand of the resources sector, the Onslow Airport has had to overcome many obstacles, including the lack of fresh water.

The Shire of Ashburton Executive Manager Infrastructure Services, Troy Davis, was on hand to accept the award and was quick to highlight the extreme technical difficulties that had to be overcome to achieve this project.

“You can’t underestimate how difficult it is to develop infrastructure of this magnitude on a salt flat, with no fresh water, in an isolated part of the country and with a multi-billion dollar LNG project hinging on its success,” Mr Davis highlighted. “To complete this project in the timeframe, with no lost time injuries was a great feat and I am very proud to be accepting the award on behalf of the Shire.”

When MC Peter FitzSimons announced Onslow as the winner, the WA table, including Exmouth, Broome and Geraldton delegates, erupted into applause.

Shire President Kerry White congratulated all those, both past and present, who have contributed towards the high standards of the Onslow Airport.

“This national recognition acknowledges that the work the Shire is undertaking is of a very high quality, and we should celebrate the extreme challenges that have had to be overcome,” Cr White said.

Premier visits OnslowThe Premier, Colin Barnett visited Onslow in December to announce a suite of projects being planned for the town, including a hospital.

After flying to Onslow in the morning, the Premier was given a tour of the Onslow Airport by Shire President Kerry White and CEO Neil Hartley.

“It was a great opportunity for the Premier to see for himself the progress being made at the airport including the terminal, runway and associated infrastructure,” Cr White said.

After a tour of the town and morning tea with the Chamber of Commerce, the Premier announced the timeline for 20 major social and community infrastructure projects, funded by Chevron and the State Government, including a new hospital, swimming pool, high school, power and water upgrades and the Onslow Ring Road. He also confirmed the government’s support for $13m to be funded from the Onslow Infrastructure Fund, to meet the finalisation costs of the Onslow Airport.

The Premier unveiled a sign detailing the projects, to be located opposite the Sun Chalets, which will show residents and visitors alike all that is going on in Onslow.

21st century hospital and health care for OnslowPremier and State Development Minister Colin Barnett announced the $41.8 million Onslow Hospital and health service redevelopment would transform local health care with an improved and expanded emergency department, modern inpatient rooms, better access to specialists via Telehealth video-conferencing and a secure mental health assessment room.

“The population of Onslow is set to grow to almost 2,000 by 2022, as a result of nearby resources developments, and the State Government is committed to providing outstanding health care for local residents,” Mr Barnett said.

“Chevron Australia is contributing $22 million towards the health services upgrade, as part of its $250 million commitment to infrastructure improvements in Onslow as it builds the nearby Wheatstone liquefied natural gas project.”

The Onslow Hospital would replace the almost 50-year-old existing hospital and create a one-stop local health services ‘hub’ bringing together aged care, community mental health, allied health, preventative health and dental services.

Work is expected to begin in 2016 and the hospital is due to be finished in 2018.

The Premier visited the Onslow airport, attended morning tea with the Chamber of Commerce and unveiled a project sign.

Rio Tinto and Shire of Ashburton Community Infrastructure and Services Partnership UpdateThe Shire of Ashburton and Rio Tinto formed a partnership in 2012 to revitalise existing and to develop new community services and infrastructure programs across Paraburdoo, Tom Price and Pannawonica. Known as the Community Infrastructure and Services Partnership (CISP), it focuses on improving the amenities and lifestyle within each town.

Rio Tinto General Manager Paraburdoo Operation Scott Wilkinson said Rio Tinto is proud to be working in partnership with the Shire of Ashburton.

“Our collaboration enables the delivery of effective projects and programmes to ensure the long-term sustainability of town services, infrastructure and events,” Mr Wilkinson said. “It focuses on making the region a better place to live and work through a shared vision of building strong and vibrant communities.”

Over the past 12 months the partnership has achieved many goals in the form of completed projects and commencement of new undertakings. A snapshot of these is provided below. Investigation of potential future infrastructure and town improvement projects are underway and feasibility studies will commence in 2015.

Directional signage – Tom Price MallDirectional and information blades were installed in the Tom Price Town Mall and were funded by Royalties for Regions, Rio Tinto and the Department of Health. The blades have brightened up the town mall and provide tourists and local residents with information on where to locate Shire facilities and local businesses.

Skate Park – Tom PriceLights have been installed at the Tom Price Skate Park enabling residents to access the park at night which is a popular option during the hot summer months. The lights operate on a timer system so users can turn them on as required.

Clem Thompson Memorial Oval and Sports Pavilion – Tom PriceThe finishing touches to the Clem Thompson Memorial Oval and Sports Pavilion have been completed including the installation of a playing surface using a type of grass that the native corellas do not eat, a new digital score board as well as lighting towers that are suitable for Australian rules football and cricket.

The perimeter of the oval has now been fenced to meet WAFL standards, practice cricket nets have been installed and a Gecko Mat is used to cover the cricket pitch.

The final internal fit out of the sports pavilion is currently underway.

Beautification project – ParaburdooDuring the year the beautification agreement for Paraburdoo contributed towards the new shade structures for the shopping centre car park as well as at the town Swimming Pool. Solar lighting at the Memorial Gardens gazebo has also been installed as part of this project.

In partnership with Tidy Towns the garden beds located outside of the Ashburton Hall and the ablution block will be revamped and replanted early in 2015.

Childcare Centre – ParaburdooIt is exciting to report that construction of the Paraburdoo Childcare Centre is due to commence in mid-2015. The new purpose built facility will accommodate 73 children with provision for long term and after school care. The centre will provide much needed support to families

living in an isolated region to enter or re-enter the workforce. The project is funded by the State Government’s Royalties for Regions, Rio Tinto, and the Shire of Ashburton – to a total of $4.66million. HQ Management has been appointed to provide project management services for the project. The first step is to relocate existing underground services and upgrade them to support the new facility.

Skate Park – ParaburdooThe location of the proposed Paraburdoo Skate Park was confirmed by Council in November 2014. Construction of the skate park is scheduled to commence March/April and will take approximately 3 months to complete. The project is funded by Lotterywest, Rio Tinto and the Shire of Ashburton, with Lotterywest funding secured in December 2014.

Events & FestivalsThanks to the hard work of the Community Development team a calendar of Events and Festivals ran in Pannawonica, Tom Price and Paraburdoo throughout the year. These included a number of ‘Welcome to Town’ events where all new and old residents come together to make new friends, promote town services and show community support. School holiday programs continue to prove popular with a fantastic level of interest across all activities. To wrap up the year we saw great participation in the Christmas lights competitions and Christmas Carols in each town.

And of course, Australia Day was again widely celebrated with festivities, games and barbeques at each of the local swimming pools.

Club DevelopmentThe Community Development and Support team have been working alongside many of the clubs and groups in the Shire to help build vibrant, healthy and active communities. The team have also hosted a number of informative workshops for residents including First Aid, Club Injury Management, Grant Application Writing as well as various club development workshops.

ANZAC Park to receive makeoverANZAC Park in Tom Price is set to receive a makeover thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Australian Government’s ANZAC Centenary program.

Shire of Ashburton President Kerry White said the Council was very pleased to receive the grant towards the project which was initially approved by Council in 2012. “We have been actively seeking funding opportunities since then, and the ANZAC Centenary Grants provided an ideal opportunity to bring this project to fruition,” Cr White said.

The funding will be used on the first stage of the Park: the commissioning, construction and installation of a pyramid which will be etched with the quintessential ANZAC values of courage, honour and mateship.

The later stages of the project will be completed as future funding sources arise. Eventually the pyramid will sit upon a stone dais and include a 15 metre high tripod that houses a crystal, positioned to catch the first ray of light as the sun rises over the Hamersley Ranges on ANZAC morning.

The 2015 Centenary of ANZAC Day marks a particularly significant milestone in Australia’s history.
