PARENTS have the primary responsibility toensure their children do not become bullies,a seminar on cyber bullying heard last night. An information evening in City Hall, hostedby cloud computing company Trend Micro toencourage safe internet use, heard that theGovernment will never be able to make theinternet safe.Anthony O’Mara, a non-executive director ofTrend Micro, which has been leading acampaign for safer internet usage, said:“Parents have the responsibility to makesure their kids don’t become bullies.Whether you are on the receiving end orgiving end, it is up to parents to protect theirchildren and to put them out into society ina way that allows everyone to co-existeasily.”

By RONAN BAGNALL

Mr O’Mara said the idea of a safer internetwas just as complex as the idea of creating asafer society. He said young people do not have the samesense of privacy that the previous generationwas brought up with.“We have a generation now who want tohave a million friends.“People forget that once something is said,it’s out there forever. And you don’t have towork very hard to find it. Young people arenot really tuned into that, or maybe they justdon’t care.”● See page six for more.
