EATING HEALTHY
Dr. Applegate met with the team to discuss nutrition and the proper fuel needed to be a successful student-athlete.
Nutrition is an important part of developing a championship team. Our players have a demanding schedule with classes, practice, strength and conditioning and shooting on their own. They need to eat regularly throughout the day. Our nutritionist, Dr. Applegate has provided each player with a 4000 calorie per day diet. She stresses that they eat some source of protein with each meal. Dr. Applegate also believes that our players need to have some type of snack before they go to bed. This is to insure that they do not wake up hungry.
Here is a sample daily meal plan for our players. Remember that this meal plan is for college athletes.
Breakfast 2-3 Eggs (any style) Bowl of oatmeal, breakfast potatoes, pancakes, waffles or toast Bacon, ham or sausage Yogurt Fruit (banana, apple, berries) 8 oz. of Skim Milk
Morning Snack/Recovery Snack 4 oz. of Turkey, Roast beef or Ham 2 slices of whole wheat bread 1 slice of provolone, cheddar or Swiss cheese 1 tbsp. of low-fat mayo or 1 tbsp. of mustard 2 slices of tomato ½ cup of lettuce 1 cup of baby carrots 1 cup of grapes 12 oz. of a sports drink

REPRESENTING THE PROGRAM ON CAMPUS
READING PROGRAM NEWSLETTER
The Aggies often join together for campus events to build camaraderie and team sprint throughout UC Davis. They recently got invited to the first Football game to be announced to the whole crowd. The team was excited to announce the release of the 2016-17 season tickets. They also attended the Freshmen rally and set up a basketball hoop for the new students to win prizes. Team leader, Darius Graham was recently invited to the new Student-Athletes rally to discuss what its like to be a collegiate athlete at UC Davis. Darius is senior this year, so he had a lot of wisdom and valuable advice for the new students.
PREPARATION
As a student-athlete, the Aggies are students first and then an athlete. Preparing as an athlete requires a lot of time and attention. The Aggies have a new strength coach this year, Justin Landry. Coach Landry trains the team to be strong with a weight lifting regimen and conditioning. The Aggies also prepare mentally by watching practice footage to be better students of the game. Above, the team is watching a projected video on the wall before practice as Coach Les is explaining how they can be better.
Lunch 4 oz. Turkey burger on a whole-wheat bun 1 leaf lettuce 2 slices of tomato 2 tbsp. of BBQ sauce or ketchup 1 cup of steamed green beans 1 cup of cottage cheese 8 oz. of iced tea (unsweetened) with lemon 1 cup of low-fat yogurt with 6 medium strawberries
Dinner 6 oz. of fish (tilapia or salmon), baked chicken or beef 1 cup of broccoli 1 cup of baby carrots (steamed) 1 cup of brown rice (measured after it’s cooked) 8 oz. of 1% milk 1 apple
Bedtime Snack (1 hour before they go to bed) Fruit Smoothie (either Blueberry, Strawberry or Peach) 1 cup of 1% Greek yogurt (plain) 8 oz. low-fat chocolate milk 1 Banana 1 cup of frozen (blueberries, strawberries or peach)
Dr. Applegate also talks with our players about staying hydrated (drinking enough water or sports drinks before, during and after practice). Staying hydrated helps to avoid muscle cramping and recovery.
