Bonjour!
and Julien Gruet bonjour, Julien!Bonjour!
Today, were going to learn some vocabulary which willbe useul when talking about a movie weve seen. First, well listen to a brie conversation between Amlie andJulien. As were listening, try to gure out the answers tothe ollowing questions: (1) How does Amlie describe theplot that is, le scnario, and (2) what is the basic plot?Allons-y!
Quas-tu ait hier soir ?Samedi dernier ? Pas grand-chose ! J ai lou unDVD. Ctait Amlie Poulain , le flm de Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Cest vraiment super comme flm !
a parle de quoi ?Cest une histoire un peu complique. a se passe Paris, surtout dans le quartier de Montmartre.
Le scnario est assez trange ! Cest lhistoire duneflle qui passe son temps aider les autres. Ellerencontre un garon un peu bizarre comme elle, etils sortent ensemble la fn
Now, lets hear all that once againQuas-tu ait hier soir ? []
Lets hear all that once againQuas-tu ait hier soir ? []
Now, you didnt see the lm in the cinemaNon. Jai lou un DVD.
Thats the verb louer, au pass compos, nest-ce pas?Lets practice using that verb: Karl rented a DVD wouldbe
Karl a lou un DVD.Karl a lou un DVD.
We rented a DVDNous avons lou un DVD.Nous avons lou un DVD.
The girls rented a DVDLes flles ont lou un DVD.Les flles ont lou un DVD.
Note!
Dont forget the auxiliary verbavoir:
Its essential or the Past tense lepass compos.
avoirjai
tu asil / elle / on a
nous avonsvous avezils / elles ont
Note!
Quas-tu fait?
= What did you do?I we were
addressing several people, we wouldsay Quavez-vous fait?
Montmartre

Basilica of the Sacr Coeur, Montmartre, Paris
Montmartre is a hill in the north o Paris, in the 18th
arrondissement. The (Catholic) basilica o the Sacr Coeur(above) and the district around it attract tourists and pilgrimsrom all over the world. The name Montmartrecomes rom
Mont des martyrs the hill o the martyrs. At the end othe 19th century, Monmartre was a centre o artistic lie in
the capital. Many artists and musicians, including Picasso andBerlioz, lived, worked and played here.

Now, to ask what the lm was about, Julien, you saida parle de quoi?
aparledequoi? Whats it about? Now, i our questionwas Who is it about?, we would change that questionto
a parle de qui?
and one more time:a parle de qui?
Amlie, you said the story wasalittlecomplicatedOui. Cest une histoire unpeucomplique.
We could have dierent possibilities here. We could saythe story is absurd
Cest une histoire absurde.Cest une histoire absurde.
Or unnyCest une histoire drle.Cest une histoire drle.
Or excitingCest une histoire passionnante.Cest une histoire passionnante.
Now, to tell us where it all takes place, you saida se passe Paris.
Thats the refexive verb se passer to happen or totake place. So, once again, It takes place in London, would be
a se passe Londres.a se passe Londres.
or New York?a se passe New York.a se passe New York.
Well need to amiliarise ourselves with this ormula in thepast tense, too: lepasscompos. When we want to sayIttookplacein Germany, we would have
a sest pass en Allemagne.
Lets hear that pronunciation againa sest pass en Allemagne.a sest pass en Allemagne.
Its important to remember both possibilities: in the
Present, we havea se passe
un peu
That is, a little.
We could also fnd (un) peu in
expressions like: Il dort peu [= he sleeps little]
Adjectives
Dont orget that adjectives mustagree with the nouns they
describe, in both number andgender.
Here, une histoire is a emininenoun, so an extra e is required onthe adjective passionnant.
(I the masculine orm o an adjective
already ends in e as is the case withboth absurde and drle, there is nochange to the eminine orm.)

while in the Past, we havea sest pass
Finally, in a wide range o situations, we will want to askthe question: Whats happening? Thats
Quest-ce qui se passe?
And once moreQuest-ce qui se passe?Quest-ce qui se passe?
I we hear a crash in the kitchen maybe someone hasdropped a glass on the foor well rush in and exclaim
Quest-ce qui sest pass?!Quest-ce qui sest pass?!
This is the ormula in the Past tense le pass compos.
Now, we spoke about une flle qui passe son temps aider les autres.
une lle qui passe son temps aider les autres, that
is, agirlwhospendshertimehelpingothers. Noticethat, in French we have the innitive o the verb aiderwhile, in English, we have the word helping. Lets seesome urther examples. He spends his time reading
Il passe son temps lire.Il passe son temps lire.
Hespendshistimeplaying computer games.Il passe son temps jouer des jeux vido.Il passe son temps jouer des jeux vido.
Theyspendtheirtimeworking.Ils passent leur temps travailler.Ils passent leur temps travailler.
On a dierent point, remind us o how you said Shemeetsa boy:
Elle rencontre un garon.
Thats the verb?Recontrer. Cest un verbe rgulier en er.
To take one more example, Hemeetsa girl would beIl rencontre une flle.
une lle a girl. Lets remember not to pronouncethose two ls: une lle. Now this verb rencontrer tomeet, is not the verb we would use i we wanted to say I
meetmy riends in town: that would beJe retrouve mes amis en ville.Je retrouve mes amis en ville.
