Module 1: Objectives
• Identifying, understanding and modelling the interdependencies between business
strategies and organizational concepts
• Becoming familiar with types, phases and tools of business strategy development as
well as its implementation
• Differentiating organizational theory approaches and adopting theoretical knowledge
into organizational structures and processes both on national and international level
• Learning the methods of organizational development and change management to
execute the match between strategy and organization
• Gaining insights in the Human Resources Department and its Value Chain from a
national and international perspective and the role of HR Management as enabler for

1. Class participation and contribution; objective: application of theory
to business practice
2. Homework (issue paper) incl. presentation (March – May 2013)
preparation time: two weeks; objective: training of academic
principles of work, communication and presentation skills. All topics
covered by issue papers provided are relevant for all students for
the final exam
3. Case study: written report, presentation incl. leading discussion
(preparation time: May 8 – June 13, 2013); objective: working on
an in-depth study and training of advanced presentation skills
(group work); presentation date: June 18, 2013
4. Written test (final exam): multiple choice and open questions (Juli
2, 2013); objective: ensuring knowledge base and understanding of
all main principles of the class

• Every student is asked to contribute actively in each class
• Only by giving comments and discussing with students and lecturers
business-related communication can be trained

2. Homework (Issue paper and presentation) - 20% -
• Homework consists of written report and presentation (10 minutes in class)
• Each student chooses his/her topic for the issue paper from a list provided
• Detailed issue paper design and questions (e. g. perspective of analysis) will be
provided in class during semester; the presentation has to be given two weeks later
(see specific due date)
• Each student works on a different topic; in case of same topic there will be different
aspects to be analyzed (e. g. industries, companies); homework and presentation has
to be prepared separately by each student
• Written report has to be submitted on specific due date until 4 pm via e-mail from the
personal email account of the student to the lecturer (hilberg@htw-berlin.de)
• If the report is not submitted in time, homework will be evaluated with mark 5,0
• If the student is not around for the presentation, presentation gets the mark 5,0
• Make sure that your personal schedule makes your homework possible
• Both in written report and in the presentation the appropriate and stringent use of
principles for academic work have to be applied (correct and complete quoting of
sources used etc.)

3. Case study (40%)
• Introduction (preparatory questions) and case studies will be provided in class on May,

• A group of approx. 5-7 students will work together on the same case
• Case study consists of written report, presentation and leading of the discussion in
class (total: 30 minutes)
• Written report has to be submitted until June 13, at 4 pm via e-mail from the personal
email-account of one group member (to be named in advance) to the lecturer
(hilberg@htw-berlin.de)
• If the report is not submitted in time, the entire course failed for all members of the
respective group
• Presentations will be given June, 18; discussion has to be managed by the presenting
student(s); lecturer is member of the audience
• Both in the written report and in the presentation the appropriate and stringent use of

4. Written test (35%)
• This written test is on July 2, 2013, 10 – 11 am and will take 60 minutes
• The test covers all topics of the course and consists of
questions/statements (correct/not correct) (25%) and open questions
(75%)

Rules of the game
• Be on-time, we don‘t have much of it; also please don‘t leave early (if you can‘t avoid
please inform lecturer in advance)
• Switch off handphones and notebooks during class
• Classroom language is english only
• You may have your drink and a little snack in class; please have your lunch outside
• Be fair if we tackle issues some of you might have heart of already before
• Ask questions if you don‘t understand or if you want to know more
• Communication platform for documents, case studies, reports etc. is Moodle2 only
(exceptions will be announced separately) ; make sure you have access and know
how required
