Origin: salvation by faith alone

Augustine, a bishop in Africa.

Martin Luther, a catholic monk in Germany.

Added “alone” (Rom 3:28).

Paul & James in conflict (James 2:20-21, 24-26).

▪ Paul refuted … meriting/earning salvation.

▪ James refuted … salvation without obedience.

Today: salvation by faith alone

Stonebrier: Swindoll

We believe . . . the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins and that all who believe in Him are declared righteous because of His sacrificial death and are, therefore, in the right relationship with Him.

Today: salvation by faith alone

TLC

…salvation is a free gift of God, based on the merits of the death of His Son, and is appropriated by faith.

Salvation is affected by …repentance, belief on the Lord Jesus (justification), and personal acceptance of Him into one’s life as Lord and Savior (regeneration).

Inconsistency: salvation by faith alone

Repentance is necessary for salvation.

Luke 13:1-5; Acts 17:30-31; Matt 21:28-31

▪ All are sinners.

▪ All must repent.

▪ Regretting sin can lead to repentance & salvation.

Inconsistency: salvation by faith alone

Loving God is necessary for salvation.

1 Cor 16:22; John 14:15; Luke 10:27

Fallacy: salvation by faith alone

Everyone in Hebrew 11 acted “by faith”.

Heard God’s word (Rom 10:17).

Trusted God’s promises (Gen 12:2-3; 13:14-17).

Complied with God’s will (Heb 11:20-26).

Fact:

Salvation is “by faith” (John 3:16; 3:36; Acts 16:31; Rom 5:1-2; 3:26-28; Eph 2:8).

“Saved by faith” NOT “at the point of faith”.

WHEN are we saved? WHEN we carry out His will by faith (Jas 2:14-26).

“By Faith”

Heb 11:24-25

.…consider how to stir up … love & works.

…do not forsake the assembly.

…encourage & exhort one another.

1 Pet 1:22

…have a sincere love of the brethren.

…fervently love …with a pure heart.

“By Faith”

Mark 16:16 16 He who has believed and has

been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.

“By Faith”

Colossians 2:12 12 having been buried with Him in

baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

“By Faith”

1 Peter 3:21 21 Corresponding to that, baptism

now saves you — not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience — through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

“By Faith”

Romans 6:3-4 3 Or do you not know that all of us

who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death 4 …so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
