African Nationalist Leaders

Map

• Served as the General Secretary for the United Gold Coast Convention .

• While serving in the Gold Coast, he was thrown in jail , he emerged as the youth leader of Ghana upon his release.

• After his jail release, Nkrumah traveled around the country protesting the British occupation of Ghana.

• The British granted only the wealthy, land owning citizens the right to vote, but this resulted in mass protesting and riots. Because of these protests, Nkrumah was sentenced to three years in jail.

• The protests continued and the British were forced to withdraw from the Gold Coast and grant Ghana its independence.

• Nkrumah was elected the first president of Ghana.

Kwame Nkrumah

• Was an Algerian Islamic soldier.

• Political and military leader who led a struggle against the French invasion in the mid-nineteenth century.

• Seen as Nationalist Hero for Algeria.

Abdelkader El Djezairi

• He played a major role in the development of the Somali Youth League.

• Led SYL itself two years later.

• When Somalia achieved its independence in 1960, Daar became the first president.

• After he had served seven years as president, he peacefully gave up his rule.

Aden Abdullah Osman Daar

• He was a militant anti-aparthied activist and leader and cofounder of the Umkhonto we Sizwe.

• He was arrested in 1962 by the British government.

• After his release from prison in 1990, Mandela and his party of nationalists entered negotiations which eventually established South Africa as a democracy.

• Nelson Mandela would be the first president of this new government.

Nelson Mandela

• The second president of Egypt.

• Along with first president Muhammad Naguib, led a Egyptian revolution in 1952, putting an end to the Egyptian and Sudanese monarchy.

• His nationalistic movements ushered on socialist reform and a brief union with Syria.

• Vietnamese , Marxist-Leninist, revolutionary leader who was the prime minister and president of the democratic republic of Vietnam.

• Key figure in the foundation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945.

• Was involved with the Peoples Army of Vietnam and the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War.

• He led the Viet Minh independence movement from 1941 onward, establishing the communist-governed Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh

• Was the preeminent leader of Indian nationalism in the British ruled India.

• Employed non-violent civil disobedience.

• Gandhi led India to independence, at the same time using nonviolence.

Mohandas Gandhi

• Political and military leader of 20th-century China.

• Chiang was an influential member of the Nationalist Party, the Kuomintang.

• He became the Commander of the Kuomintang's Whampoa Military Academy.

• Chiang led China in the Second Sino-Japanese War, during which the Nationalist government's power severely weakened, but his prominence grew.

Chiang Kai-Shek

• Chinese revolutionary and first president and founding father of the Republic of China.

• Sun helped overthrow the Qing dynasty during the Xinhai Revolution.

• He was the first provisional president when the Republic of China was founded in 1912.

• Co-founded the Kuomintang, serving as its first leader.

Sun Yat-sen

• General of the Imperial Japanese Army, the leader of the Taisei Yokusankai.

• He was directly responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbor, leading to war with the U.S.

• Tojo was arrested, sentenced to death for Japanese war crimes.
