    Save the date. The Fall General Meeting ofthe FHS will be held on Sunday, Novemberlst at 1:30 p.m. in the large meeting room atthe Fitchburg Public Library. The programis presently in the planning stage. Whendetails are worked out you will be notified.

    HISTORIC PROPERTIES

    The Fitchburg Landmarks PreservationCommission has presented a copy of itsnewly printed book, Historic Properties afFitchburg, to the FHS. It showcases someof Fitchburg's historic sites and homes thatare designated on the City's register ofhistoric places as well as those that are onthe National Register of Historic Homes.The book contains a thumbnail history ofFitchburg along with the requirements foradding sites to the register, the currentOrdinance and contact information fordesignation. Among the homes and sites inthe book are the Mann House (Quivey'sGrove), Fox Hall, the two cemeteries inFitchburg and the Oscar Mayer Observatory.Other sites and homes are also included. Thebook has been added to the shelves of theFHS archives. Under the terms ofpublication it cal only be used as areference, not checked out. You can makean appointment to read the book in the

    Fitchburg Room on the second floor of thelibrary by contacting the FHS either bytelephone, 608-729-1783 or by email,

    FOX PAINTING

    Earlier this summer the Fitchburg HistoricalSociety was gifted a painting of KatherineBrigham Fox and her daughter Anna done in

    : :.,: 1907.It is too large todisplay in our archivesand too precious tostore a.way, sightunseen. Although wehave limits on what wecan accept this was toobeautiful to turn down.Arrangements havebeen made to have it

    hung at the Fitchburg Senior Center. Whatcould be more appropriate than in the FoxCrossing Room? The painting fits in an idealspot in the built-in bookcase. It is markedwith a sign that shows it is the property ofthe FHS. We extend our thanks to DickLindberg of Oregon, WI., v,ho donated thepainting and to the staff at the Senior Centerwho have accepted the loan of the painting.Mr. and Mrs. Lindberg were close personalfriends of both Anna and Phil Fox

  • SWAN CREEK SEWING CIRCLE

    Swan Creek Sewing Circle is celebrating its100ft Anniversary this year! The club beganon December 1, 1915, when a group of 15women met at the home of Amanda Culpwith the idea of organizing a social club tobreak the monotony of everyday farm life.

    The women had the opportunity to chat withtheir neighbors while they made quilts, knitmittens scarves and socks for men in theservice of our county and engaged in manyother charitable works. A displayhighlighting this organization that hasendured for 100 years, with membersmeeting each month to continue theirendeavors, can be seen on the second floorof the Fitchburg Public Library near theFitchburg Room. Take time to view thisimpressive display! Today's members willbe honored at the Fal1 Meeting of the FHS.

    BADGER BIKE TRAIL SIGNAGE

    New signs along the Badger State bike trailin Fitchburg are being prepared by the Cityof Fitchburg Planning and Zonrng

    department. They will be located at strategicspots with text and photos to inform bikeriders of the things that are or have beenlocated nearby. The signs should be in placelater this srrnmer.
